How much is a person affected by their name, I wonder? Certainly their outward style is affected. What kind of person would I have been had I been named Smith? Would I change my name?

...the sole and express purpose of every intelligent man is to babble - that is, a deliberate pouring from empty into void. Man is so partial to systems and abstract conclusions that he is ready intentionally to distort the truth... -Notes from Underground

You might be interested in a reasonably interesting article by Steven Levitt on the impact of names. You can find it in his book (the childish Freakonomics), or just by doing a search for it. Ultimately, however, names are relatively marginal in impact (especially in regard to future earnings). If you were aware of any psychological studies on the effects of names though, it would be interesting to look at.
